Introduction

For international students, workers, and future permanent residents, one of the most important questions is: “How long will my application take?” Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updates its processing times weekly, and since mid-July 2025, several categories have seen noticeable changes.

This article breaks down the latest timelines for permanent residence, temporary visas, work and study permits, and citizenship applications.

Permanent Residence (PR) Applications

IRCC continues to prioritize Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) applications. As of September 2025:

  • Express Entry (CEC & FSW): 6–8 months (slight improvement since July).
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): 8–10 months (unchanged).
  • Family Sponsorship (Spouse/Common-Law): 12 months (consistent).

Temporary Resident Visas (TRV)

Visitor visa processing has lengthened in some regions:

  • Outside Canada applications: 40–60 days on average.
  • Inside Canada applications: 25–30 days.
This represents a slower pace compared to July 2025.

Work Permits

For international workers and LMIA-supported applicants:

  • Work permit from outside Canada: 10–12 weeks.
  • Work permit extensions inside Canada: 3–4 months.
These times are slightly longer compared to mid-July, reflecting high demand.

Study Permits

International student applications continue to experience pressure due to the September intake:

  • New study permit applications: 8–10 weeks.
  • Study permit extensions: 3–4 weeks (faster than July).

This shift shows IRCC focusing on students already in Canada.

Citizenship Applications

Processing times for Canadian citizenship remain steady:

  • Citizenship grant: ~15 months.
  • Citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship): ~8 months.

Conclusion

While PR applications remain stable and student extensions are moving faster, temporary resident visas and work permits have slowed since mid-July 2025. Applicants should plan ahead, submit complete applications, and monitor weekly updates on IRCC’s website.
