Your Quick Guide to Canada’s PGWP in 2025: Work After Study

Share

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets international students work in Canada after graduating from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). It’s your ticket to gain Canadian work experience and a shot at permanent residency. Here’s a simple guide to nailing the PGWP in 2025.

What’s the PGWP?

A PGWP is an open work permit for international graduates to work for any employer in Canada. It lasts from 8 months to 3 years, based on your study program’s length. You can only get it once, so make it count!

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, you need to:

  • Graduate from an eligible DLI (check IRCC’s list).
  • Complete a program of at least 8 months leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
  • Study full-time (except your final semester or approved leaves).
  • Apply within 180 days of getting your degree or transcript.
  • Have a valid (or recently expired) study permit.
  • New for 2025: University graduates need a CLB 7 language score (e.g., IELTS 6.0 in each skill) if applying after November 1, 2024.

Note: Since September 1, 2024, private college programs under curriculum licensing agreements don’t qualify for PGWPs.

What’s New in 2025?

  • Master’s Bonus: Master’s graduates get a 3-year PGWP, even for short programs.
  • Language Rule: University grads need to prove CLB 7 in English or French.
  • Stricter Checks: Schools must report your enrollment, and non-compliant DLIs may lose eligibility.
  • No PGWP for Some Colleges: Avoid private colleges with public college curricula—they’re ineligible.

How to Apply

  1. Gather Docs:
    • Degree/transcript from your DLI.
    • Valid passport and study permit.
    • Language test results (if needed).
    • Application form (IMM 5710).
  2. Apply Online:
    • Submit via IRCC’s portal within 180 days of graduation.
    • Pay CAD 255 (includes work permit fee).
    • Processing takes 2–4 months.
  3. Work While Waiting:
    • If you apply before your study permit expires, you can work full-time under “maintained status.”

Top Tips

  • Check Your DLI: Confirm it’s PGWP-eligible before enrolling.
  • Test Early: Take your language test (IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF Canada) before graduating.
  • Apply Fast: Don’t miss the 180-day deadline.
  • Get Help: Use a licensed immigration consultant (like Check Check Services) for a smooth application.
  • Plan Ahead: Use your PGWP to gain skilled work experience for permanent residency.
